CHRISTMAS
IN JULY
A select and small band of clubbies made a trip to Warwick for this
annual event.. We met at McDonalds at Goodna, and were underway
by about 4:00 pm. The drive out past Aratula and up Cunningham’s
Gap is always fun. It is truly amazing how quickly a Corvette can
drop off pace when the long arm of the law appears on the side of
the road.
We reached the Criterion Hotel about 6:00 p.m. and booked into our
rooms. The hotel is being restored, and is very interesting. After
a few sherbets in bar, we piled into the dining room with a log
fire for a murder mystery night. There was plenty of alcohol and
various people acting out murder mystery parts which they were given
in sealed envelopes. I am led to believe that some of the party
even had a basic understanding of what was going on. I think the
correct term for this type of event is “free form”.
It turned out that Sandy was the villain. Anne Wilkinson won the
prize for the best act.
The meal was prepared by none other than our Elfi Wren, and was
absolutely scrumptious. I had the Beef Wellington, Inspector Bradley
Clousseau couldn’t wait for me to finish it and discovered
I had been murdered while I was about half way through the meal.
In our excitement of the Murder Mystery, we nearly forgot to open
the Christmas Gifts, which were excellent choices and well received.
Several of us failed to go the distance, and retired about midnight.
I am told that there were only a few hardened drinkers still propping
up the bar by 2:30 a.m. For some, breakfast really did not happen.
Others took a stroll through the Sunday markets.
It seems one couple even had an early morning visit in their room
from a friendly resident Poltergeist.
After the obligatory photo shoot, we were on our way for a Sunday
morning cruise. Brad found the bumpiest sealed road in Queensland,
and we all spent the next hour or so polishing exhausts, wheel arches
etc as we drove. Eventually the road smoothed out, and we cruised
on to Koralbyn for lunch, and then finally up the Mount Lindsay
Highway for home.
