The weather ended up solving the direction of
the Mystery Boxing Day run. It was so hot we decided it would
be better to stick to the coast rather than head inland. Barbara
and I were determined we weren’t going to arrive late
for our own run and arrived precisely at 10:15 as we’d
said 10:15 for a 10:30 departure. The C5 was reporting 37 degrees
outside and upon arrival there were 5 corvettes in the car park
with a small group huddled under the sparse shade of a bush.
The others had retreated to the air-conditioning inside East
leagues Club.
By 10:35 no-one else had arrived , so despite
our good intentions we were still the last to arrive. We set
off for a short cruise on the Gateway then down Ford—Avalon
roads for morning tea at Sirromet Winery, east of Mount Cotton.
We had all these great ideas for where we could go for morning
tea but Sirromet was the only place we could find near our route
which was open on Boxing Day.
Finishing morning tea we did a loop round Mount
Cotton coming back via West Mount Cotton Road and headed down
to Wellington Point where we had planned to have lunch. We’d
checked out Wellington Point the previous Sunday and there were
heaps of car parks and room at the cafes but on the day there
were no spare spaces to be seen and the cafes looked crowded.
Turning to improvised Plan B, 5 out of the 6 Corvettes came
back to our place nearby at Birkdale for a BBQ. Barbara bolted
out and bought some supplies.
Turning to traditional roles the Guys retreated
to the Garage and stood around watching John Tait raise the
front of his C5 an inch—back to standard height, while
the Girls drank wine on the deck and Owe cooked the food for
us.
I suspect we probably set a couple of
new records for a formal club run
Highest proportion of C5s on a formal club run at 33% (2 out
of 6).
Lowest high speed (to John Webros disgust) at approx 80 Km/hr.
Thanks to all who came I enjoyed the day.
