2004 INDY VETTE SPRINTS

Despite rain falling 4 a.m. till 6 a.m., the rest of the day was fine. The puddles dried up by 9 a.m. resulting in a fantastic day all round. 25 competitors (3 Ladies) took the challenge of the 4 events and had a ball putting the various makes through 8 runs against the clock and ya just had to beat the car in the other identical lane. 18 Vettes, 7 Cobras, a Transam, Camaro and a WRX (Glen Dale) whom we allowed to run unofficially, this time only. All drivers had good and bad runs. Lot of leadfoot’n and all that stuff that goes with trying to beat the clock.

The cobras are very quick in a straight line but struggled to keep up with the Vettes at the finish line. Many times they blamed the lack of power steering in the Cobras but I blame the lack of foot control. They did, I think, have the most fun out there. The Transam and Camaro spent most of the day battling it out together in their own little war. All the action kept a big crowd of spectators entertained all day.

The Lanes looked sharp, the club tents, and the Roil Oils and Katicore sponsor displays, food vans and tests made our presentation of this event very professional. We should be proud of such a performance. To add to the day Raceline held a Show & Shine next to us and some of us took home some more hardware.

Our Sprints Trophy Presentation was held soon after the final runs and good looking trophies with goodies bags were presented to all the winners. Particularly one little short haired suicide blonde piece of female work by the name of Tammy Howe who sent all out male egos into a nose dive by taking out 1st Place Overall. Brilliant Effort !

And a brilliant effort to all those who helped setup and helped run and helped dismantle the events. You know who you are and you are the backbone of the club, not the jawbone. You are the same faces of supporters that keep this club strong, no matter what. Good on Ya’s.

Highlights
• Temporary fence hire kept us safe again. On Ya Rob.
• Rural fire truck did the driver pickup in 127.0 seconds. Flags and bucket had to be lifted up to the driver. They had a fun day and raised money as well.
• Jet bike was on display. They wanted to fire it up over the water, but some concern about the melting of fibreglass at Marina Mirage.
• I took Bill Dixon’s big block for a squirt up and down the slalom. What a handful. The grunt—like woman say, There’s no substitute for cubic inches !
• Blocks Butts sore after sheila kicks ass !
• GC Council supplied barriers and cones again. Big thanks.
• A turbocharged Skyline GT on NOS driven by Qld’s top drifter champ was allowed to have a practice run on the slalom, followed by a run against the clock.
His time was 33.8 seconds using handbrake. Best run of the day was 33.0 seconds in a Vette without using handbrake assisted turns. A handbrake turn means you can sprint right up to the cone, turn then pull handbrake immediately after, causing the rear to slide around 180 degrees or more depending how far around you want to spin. Handbrake turns are not really possible on Vettes as applying the handbrake does not lock the rear wheels.

Lowlights
• Cobra brakes failed to stop car adequately so car was sidelined until problem solved.
• Cobra blows main oil line. Drops oil around lane requiring sand to be spread. Lane useable with caution.
• No Mustangs competed. Pony Politics ? We’ll find out.
• Rick’s Rod rolls over. Passengers OK minus a bit of skin. They should be eligible for the Elite Rollover Club.
• Red C4 chucks donuts in a clockwise direction in N.P.U. That’s a big NO! NO! Dopey.
• A lot of work for Brad & Sandy and me but it is very rewarding to see the event go down so well.
