American Icons Day - Sunday 10th August 2008

The feed back to the editor rates this day among the best. The volume of info provided results in a separate folio which will be handed out at the next meeting. The dialogue from Peter sums it up:

“After months of coordination, the day finally dawned. The red whit & blue was flying & even Elvis made a comeback for what turned out to be one of the best organized events we have attended.  Ali & I left the Gold Coast at 7.00am with Ian & Sonya , picked up Dave & Barb (Kelly) along the way but could not locate the yellow C5 (Santa & helper) and arrived at Morgan & Wackers in Newstead in time to take in the vision of a sea of Harleys and Vettes.  The two C3’ refuelled along the way but not so the C5.

It was a beautiful winters day, chilly early but perfect by mid morning.  Corvettes totalled 16, mustangs and cobras 19 which together with 76 Harleys produced an attendance of 180 people.  The related logistics presented a huge challenge to Nev. People on corners giving hand signalled directions, back up support vehicles, toilet stops and scenic routes were a testimony to his detailed planning.

An excellent morning tea was provided by parents & students from Harlin State School (20k lm past Esk) and in return, they received a cheque for $900 for their school fund which with the raffle they ran gave them a total of $1400 for the day.  John Webro filled up his Uncle Sam’s hat with cakes & cookies, Kevin (Silk) and Geoff (Roberts) got scared when they rang the bell thinking that it was detention time and Ernie (Whittle) said he never been to Primary School before.

150 kms and another tank of fuel later, we ended up at Nev’s ranch.  Thanks to the Indooroopilly police through Luke & John this part of the trip was safe, enjoyable and the convoy was a sight to behold.  Great so far but now Nev excelled with American food, drinks & live music in relaxing surrounds.

What a wonderful day joining 2 & 4 wheel enthusiasts together.  As I love both it was definitely my kind of day but it worked for the others too.  Throw in the great friends of the club, new friends met on the day and Kev’s organizational skills it a recipe to be repeated.  Our C3 did 420 kms on the day as its first outing and I think that I’ve converted Ali to appreciating how much fun they are.

Mmmmm…, what are we going to do now to top this Nev?”

The cost per head for the day was $20.00.  The proceeds were used to cover the outgoings and $ 900 to the Harlin State School, $200 the Clagiraba Fire Brigade and $400 to the MDA society. Fun & reward is a great combination
