Australia Day Run - Saturday 26th January 2008

The day started un-seasonally cool and clear as fourteen Corvettes and a lone GTR XU1 met at the 7/11 service station on Mt Gravatt - Capalaba Road.  Our 7:15am departure was delayed slightly as we patiently waited for a member who had forgotten to read the details in his magazine.  Another pillar of our club suffered electrical problems on his way to the meeting point and was forced to delay his arrival until lunch time.

Never the less, a convoy of gleaming Corvettes made for a beautiful sight as we snaked our way through Capalaba en-route to the annual Bayside Vintage and Classic Car Rally at the Ormiston State School.  We arrived at the school grounds early enough to be able to park the vettes in one lovely straight line and enjoy a tasty breakfast prepared by the rally organisers.  We all enjoyed walking amongst the enormous variety of vehicles on display while another member spent his time replacing a leaking coolant line.

Leaving the vehicle display proved a real test of patience as the single gate became quite congested and well meaning marshals gave conflicting directions that only served to break our group onto segments.  We chose a suitable length of kerb in Wellington Street for a short wait to re-group before heading south towards our planned stop at Dream World.

The scenic drive through rural Redland Bay must have proven too much for the more anxious members of our convoy as they zoomed past the run leader as soon as we hit the Pacific Motorway.  Unfortunately, the Queensland Police Service were waiting at the Dream World Exit - but only to invite a couple of members to assist with a little random breath testing.  Keith and Kay Hoskins were among those members assisting with breath samples however, the boys in blue were not happy with Kay's persistent refusal to blow in the bag.  On the third try, the flustered officer finally realised that Keith was driving from the other side of the vette (LHD) and Kay was simply enjoying the ride as passenger.  We really have to stop involving the Police in our club runs, that that's the second time since Bribie Island (enough said).

A quick pit stop at the Mobile Service Station and Ernie volunteered to lead the pack up the Mountain.  Somehow, the first six vettes became separated from the group and enjoyed a scenic yet quick country drive via Maudsland Road to the other side of Mt Tamborine and finally back to the Eagle Heights Hotel.  Strangely enough, arriving only minutes after the rest of the convoy that had come the short way????   In all, 16 Corvettes, one GTR XU1 and one GTHO Falcon came along for the ride, bringing 32 drivers and passengers.

Many thanks to the staff of the Eagle Heights Hotel, who allowed our group to park on the grassed area beside the restaurant.  Everyone enjoyed a few cool  refreshments, a lovely lunch and Australia Day entertainment with our own Jolly Swagman - Pete, please thank your dad for us.  Wonderful to have Nev arrive safely on his ever reliable Harley after those early electrical problems.

Special thanks to a couple of lovely new club members making their first club run, we trust you enjoyed a great day and look forward to enjoying your company again soon.

After much socialising and merriment, it was time to head back to suburbia - another great club run, thank you everyone.

and a special thanks to my eleven year old daughter and navigator, Alison, who kept a watchful eye on the convoy behind us and took many of these pictures.
