A warm summer evening saw 18 Corvettes, 1 Camaro & a 4
x 4 leave Moss St., a little later than planned,
less than 3 kilometres into our
journey, I get a call on the CB radio from Keith, ”where are you?,
we're on the Story Bridge with about 6 other cars, the rest are lined
up waiting to go through the Ivory Street Tunnel". I think to myself, this
is going to be a disaster, but don’t spit the dummy Nev, at least myself &
Barb Kelly will finish because Barb has welded the C5 to the rear of my car,
NO WAY was Barb getting lost unless I did. By the time we got to our 3rd
object, John & Susie were off track & John
had spat the dummy so Susie in her wisdom (not wanting to risk a
marriage) suggested they head straight for the coffee shop. From then
on everything settled down as the tailenders pushed a bit harder to keep the
convoy bunched up. A couple of stops to check on everyone & leg / wee
stop @ Nudgee was most welcome, out into the Western Suburbs through our
only tree tunnel all night past $250,000,00.00 worth of house on Laurel
Ave., ( well for some of us!!!) & on to the Coffee Club @ Mt Gravatt for
supper.
In total the evening was pretty good, not an easy event when you
cannot place corner markers but something different & I would say that most
enjoyed themselves.
We covered 76 km, crossed the
Brisbane
River 7 times (7 Bridges), Drove through 10 Tunnels + 1 Tree Tunnel &
crossed over or drove under a further 56 structures. Apart from taking
3.25 hours ( it was planned & timed on the Thursday night for 2 hours max) &
losing the Webros’ the only other mishap all night occurred wwhen Keith
Hosking's C3 dropped a vacuum hose off the power booster causing it to idle
@ about 2000 RPM so Keith & Kay headed for
home a little earlier than planned.
Quite a few people had a hand in this run and I express
my Thanks to All of Them:
Ronnie (Da Boss) Ansell from the HOGS for his ideas &
assistance in laying out the course.
Kev & Denise Silk, Kev for running the course with me
on the Thursday night before & taking notes.
To Denise for deciphering Kev's handwriting & typing up the run
sheets for everyone.
To Keith
for suppling 2 of the CB's & also assisting, Kev & Brad for taking the CB's
on the night & trying to keep the convoy together.
To the Staff of the Coffee Club @ Mt Gravatt they
certainly looked after us at the end of our journey.
Most of all to the members who took the time to try
something a little different.
Nev with thanks to Ali for the pictures
