This wasn't a club run but I thought our members might enjoy a quick
look at a few of the classic cars that were part of Speed on Tweed
2008.
I attended most of the Saturday events with blue skies and temperatures reaching the low
thirties by lunch time. Thankfully, a cool breeze moved in
after midday, bring a refreshing reprieve from the mornings
oppressive humidity.
I'll paint a quick picture (remember, a picture paints a thousand
words but, occupies 3000 times the memory), for anyone who hasn't
previously enjoyed this festival.
Every September, approximately, 20,000 racing enthusiasts converge on the northern
NSW town of Murwillumbah for the annual historic speed trials. The
main street of town turns into one huge party with a family
orientated street parade on Friday night and the glitz and glamour
of a grand concert and dining extravaganza on Saturday night. The Festival of Speed on Tweed is a non-profit event run by the
Rotary Club of Murwillumbah together with a group of extremely
dedicated volunteers. Over $160,000.00 has been donated to national
charities such as Children's Cancer Institute and The Peter Brock
Foundation as well as local Service Clubs, schools, Emergency
Services and Hospitals.
In 2008, the Festival of Speed on Tweed is proud to support the
McGrath Foundation, which continues the ongoing fight against breast
cancer.
Festival highlights include, a huge static car display including
show 'n' shine judging, a fantastic display of operational race cars
from all backgrounds & era's, a full-on street racing program,
working pits, industry exhibits, all manner of race memorabilia plus
a great range of fresh food & refreshing drinks and entertaining
displays by various community groups..
This is a fantastic festival celebrating Australian motoring that
is supported by a wonderful community and a hard working team of
dedicated volunteers.
For me, the highlight of this event is to be able to hear, see
and smell these highly desirable cars in action. I find this
is one tangible characteristic that really separates this
event from the many static shows that we attend each year, and this
will always make the Speed on Tweed Festival truly unique.
2008 was to have been the last Speed on Tweed but, I understand
that negotiations are already underway to ensure this marvellous
event continues into the future. I wish the organisers well
and thank them for hosting such a wonderful Festival in 2008.
