All American Day, 4th July 2010.  Lakeside Raceway

Well what can I say, almost a perfect day, after months of planning it was a credit to both Queensland Raceway and Chris Malone of the Pontiac Club, it was always going to be huge.  Our Club booked 20 pit stalls which we pretty well filled, Bryan Wharton and myself and a few other members had arrived early to set up ready for the arrival of the Thunderbird cruise.

Performax brought the famous red ZR1 and a Z06, a truck and a Mustang down to display.  With the arrival of the cruise the day was officially started, we attended a quick drivers briefing followed by an event briefing and the Tricarathalon ( 3 events) was off.  The QCC were in charge of the slalom which needed about six members to run; mainly to pick up the road cone that I knocked over, the second event was the Drags which was run by the Chevy Club, the final and the most difficult run was the Hill Climb which was run by the Mustang Club.  This event, due to the danger of the track, was the most difficult to run as the organizer couldn’t see all the track so 3 people had to monitor it and report back to the starter.  Unfortunately one of our cars came unstuck on this section.

Next event was the club sponsored cruises around the track.  Some clubs had paid for 15 minutes track time which enabled us to cruise around the Lakeside track and not exceed the speed limit of 120mph; I mean 120mph!  I think I speak for everyone, we had a ball.  You really appreciate the skills of race car drivers when you drive your car around a purpose built track.

The finished with an all car cruise, including drivers like Victor Bray in his original 57 Chevy supercharged street car.  Almost all the brands were represented which made for an interesting day for both enthusiasts and spectators.  Since the event, Web sites have been buzzing with praise and the expectation of next years event.

Wrapping up the day, we spoke to John Tetley of Qld Raceway and there is talk of a Thanks Giving Day event in November.

I will keep you posted of the developments.  Again it was a great day, thanks to all the members that helped with the events, can't wait for next time!

Cheers Ian Moss
