  Thanksgiving Run - 28th November 2010 - Lakeside Raceway

Eight Corvettes gathered at Clive Peeters bright and early Sunday morning. Rain was threatening and a cheer arose as Doylie rounded the corner, it was a close call!

Phil Murray brought his Mum & Dad to chaperone and John Valenti helped with the transport problems.  Not sure what Phil’s Dad thought about being driven around by a Funeral Director wearing a Zombie T-shirt!

We had a good run across town, especially as all the radars and highway patrol cars seemed to be facing South – apparently there was a “Blitz” on that Sunday.

On arriving at Lakeside, we were so surprised to see how much Qld Raceways has done just since July 4th!   A new access road in, new shelters all along Pit Lane, two new sheds for the rescue/medical vehicles in attendance and a new food venue down our end of the track.  All the usual retailers were in attendance, including Mossy with his new Business Venture.  He was like a man possessed, running  between his two “jobs” for the day.  They even had a four piece band playing!

Other Club Members met us there, including brand new Members Gordon Walden and Tony & Vicki Jeffs, both of whom were driving yellow C3’s.  What’s happening in the Club Peter??  Ernie’s old ’78 silver anniversary model came to visit for the morning and Gary Lee launched his red beast for the very first time also.  Ran well all day and now he just has to get it registered.

After a few early showers, the rain cleared and we were left with a warm cloudy day for the rest of our visit - perfect!

About 500 cars were there in Club displays and about another 1,000 had come to have a look, so this really is a major event in the Brisbane car lover’s calendar now.  John Tetley told us it was also attracting International interest, so that is terrific and means these two days look like becoming fixtures.

The Tricarthalon started a little slowly (especially for John Webro, who had an electrical fault and conked out in the approach to the track).  Luckily, he managed to get it going after 20 minutes and did a solo run around the back of the pack.  He still managed to come 2nd in two of the four Events and so won himself two trophies.  Well done John!  Trophies also to Paul Dale for 3rd in the Slalom and Ernie won the Ironman Championship Trophy for best over the whole four Events!  So the QCC really shone on the day!  Thanks to all the QCC members who helped run the Slalom section, all went smoothly.  Phil’s Mum’s heart was bursting with pride, as she told me he was the one dropping the starting flag- a very important job!

We decide to pool our track time with the Downunder Club, so that we both could enjoy 2 x 15 minute sessions on the track with just Corvettes.  Great fun and for many, the best part of the day!

Safety Officer Ernie was happy that no incidents occurred during the day, except Keith Hosking’s son-in-law decided to visit the grassy strip just before the straight, but no damage thankfully.

John Tetley and his team ran a really professional smooth operation and we take our hats off to them.

Come along to the next one on July 3rd 2011, and see for yourself what a great day it can be!
