President's Report (April 2003)

What do you know? Another month has just flown by. It seems as though I just wrote my last report yesterday. April has been a busy month, with great turn outs to the Beenleigh Drivein night and our first Show 'n Shine (Super Sunday) with Raceline at Parklands, and the 15th National Corvette Convention in Canberra.

The 35th ANNUAL BRISBANE HOT ROD AND STREET MACHINE SPECTACULAR, a 4 day event held on the Labour Day long weekend 2nd – 5th May at the RNA Showgrounds. We are running a 50th Anniversary Theme and displaying 9 vehicles from C1 to C5. We will be located in the Exhibition Building which is the main entry building. We still require more volunteers to help us on the display and to talk to the public about the club and our cars. Please phone me on my mobile 0414 730 833 and let me know what times you can help out over this weekend.

Again, we have been invited to be an official support event for the Indy 300 to be held in October. This year, Lexmark is the Corporate Sponsor taking over from Honda. Last year we ran a two day event, The Indy Corvette Festival (Indy Vette Fest) at Anzac Park - Southport, with our Annual Concourse on the Saturday and a Gymkhana on Sunday. This year we are looking at separating the two events: the Gymkhana being held on Sunday 3 weeks before Indy at Anzac Park and inviting the other Muscle Car Clubs to participate; and the Annual Concourse (Indy Vette Fest) being held in conjunction with Raceline Promotions at Parklands Showground on Sunday the 19th October 2003. This proposition will be brought to the May meeting Wednesday 7th for discussion and a vote; because we have to finalise dates with the Gold Coast Motor Events Corporation as soon as possible. So, come along to the meeting and give us your thoughts and any ideas you may have that will assist in these events. Also for discussion, we are looking at raising the cost of Membership to cover the spiralling costs of postage and printing of the Vetteletter.

The 15th Corvette Convention Celebrating Corvettes 50th Anniversary has been and gone. Congratulations to Corvettes of Canberra, Gary Sykes and his team of helpers for running another fantastic convention. The venues, the food the weather, the cars, and most of all the people, made this a most enjoyable and memorable event. It was great to see Jim & Shirley Hornaday again from Alabama. The last convention they visited was at Sydney in 2000. Jim is a founding member of the National Corvette Museum and is an avid Corvette collector with more than 10 Corvettes. Shirley also has a couple of her own. Queensland had around 50 enthusiasts attend this wonderful event. Anyone that has been to a convention will know how full on these Easter long Weekends are and what value for money you get.

Next year the Convention will be held in Melbourne, with Corvettes of Melbourne and Vic Vettes presenting CORVETTES ROAR EASTER 2004 (April 9th 12th ). Registration forms will be with the Vetteletter and remember, if you register and pay your deposit before the 1st July 2003 you could win free entry and accommodation for entrant and partner. Also all entrants will go in the draw to win two free air tickets to anywhere in America. This will be another great event to look forward to, so get in early and support the Corvette fraternity. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

It's been great seeing so many people on the runs lately, hope to see you all at the Hot Rod Show. Come and check out our display and have a chat.

Till next month
Drive your Dream
