Always Something There To Remind Me

Sometimes memories just aren't enough.  Neither are photo's.  Certain trips require a physical memento - an object that evokes a different time, a distant place, a reward or an uncharacteristically strong Australian dollar.  Keith Hosking deservingly so, now has one of these, the inaugural "Skid Marks " award for his efforts in organising our Gympie skid pan weekend. Silky and Webro also join him for their antics on this very satisfying club outing. Arranging the route, meal venues, accommodation and entertainment for a group of up to 60 people takes a lot of skill, time and organisation which is sometimes taken for granted by others.  Well done to all those members who volunteer for this duty and remember, it's hard to please everyone, but most are very appreciative!  Brad also earned a temporary memento, finding himself in the spotlight during the last meeting wearing a Tu-Tu to remind us all about his pirouette skills, ( we think he's enjoying all the dress ups! )

In an era where almost everything can be purchased with broadband and available credit, the impulse to buy trophies of some description is becoming in Lewis Carroll's words, "curiouser and curiouser."  More rewarding to earn one than to purchase and we have lots more opportunities before the year is out.  Sometimes the trophy is just the success of an event !

Holden, down in Port Melbourne, Victoria also have their chance to earn a huge trophy in the face of flagging GM sales.  General Motors has invited them and the other 9 of its studios around the world to submit designs for the 2013 Corvette.  They have to develop a design that feels trimmer and meaner, to go along with the incredible performance as well as a much better interior that the customers desire.  They get the easy job, we as owners then have to throw the car around skid pans, cruise the mountains and coasts as well as taking them to shows....  Good luck to the Aussie team, be great for us to have an Oz design Vette and see if they can supply a new  standard right hand drive model???

Back to trophies...... Corvettes Down Under Car Club have their "Classic" car show on July 11th so it's up to us to see how many outstanding car awards they can present us with, then of course our big one, "Corvettes on the Coast" August 22nd.  With all our plans in place to host the event and Brad and Sal having a final meeting with the local Council and we should be organising our own personal plans to earn something to place on the trophy shelf. They are a gesture by which you can transpose this experience to your domestic life, a way of saying that even though it was yesterday, thoughts can accompany you today and be a very subtle reminder of success.

Long time member Allen Squire was lucky enough last month to obtain an outstanding trophy.  A very beautiful Sue is now his wife.  After years of trying to obtain and win this trophy Al was finally successful and I too was very proud to attend as MC for the evening.

Tacky souvenirs are a statement of just how refined your kitsch aesthetic is, but well earned and highly sort after trophies are awarded to those who deserve the success from their results and also because sometimes, memories aren't enough....

Many of us inherited our love for cars and life from our fathers and mine is no different, so my " Best Trophy " is obtaining that obsession from him.....

See you on the next podium.............

cheers Peter Turner
